20 January 2025 – Tirana International Airport is certified with Level 3-Optimization, by the Airport Carbon Accreditation program; the only institutionally approved program run by Airports Council International. TIA is committed to sustainability and carbon emission reduction as one of the key pillars of the company’s operational strategy. This certification comes after a long monitoring and evaluation process by independent auditors with the appropriate expertise to evaluate the planning and implementation of the activities needed to achieve reduction of negative impact on the environment.
TIA has taken a fresh approach to the challenge of climate change and has taken a number of measures to reduce carbon waste and use of renewable energy.
With innovative investments made possible by Kastrati Group, the airport has invested around 5 million euros to minimize the environmental impacts that come from aviation activity:
- Installing and operating solar panels on the airport buildings, aninvestment that has already reduced airport’s non-renewable energy by producing 5700 MW since starting its operation.
- Airside and Terminal building lighting is replaced by LED instead of halogen reducing the necessary energy consumption by 50%
- The reduced amount of carbon due to the use of renewable energy is4’443 tonnes for the years 2023 and 2024.The estimated number of trees saved by this initiative is estimated 155’497 trees.
- The ground handling fleet is being replaced with electric vehicles, with 0 carbon emission
With the achievement of Level 3 optimization, TIA goes one step beyond. This level marks not only the airport’s individual efforts to reduce the impact on the environment, but also the commitment of all stakeholders to the same goal.

Eriola Tola, Airport Asset Management and Environment Director, said: “This accreditation marks another major milestone as we progress towards Net Zero emissions and build upon the important work already done through our sustainability strategy. The airport’s management team is aware about the impact our operations have on the local, regional and global environment. We have built a clear plan for identifying all stakeholders at the airport and have classified them according to their level of impact on the environment and carbon emission. These include, partner airlines, local authorities, commercial partners working at the airport, employees, etc. Our goal is to engage them in joint initiatives for reducing waste and remaining committed to continuous improvement . Our program encourages a shared vision and commitment to further enhance our sustainability efforts to reduce our environmental impact.
Kastrati Group, the sole shareholder of Tirana International Airport has congratulated the airport team on this achievement. Kastrati Group in its development plans aims to establish facilities for renewable energy production.
After the certification process, Olivier Jankovec, General Director of the International Airport Council of Europe, expressed ” Congratulations to Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza on reaching Level 3 Optimisation within Airport Carbon Accreditation! Level 3 means achieving a significant level of performance and maturity in delivering on the commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Kudos to the entire team and I look forward to celebrating more of their accomplishments on their journey towards net zero.”
Investments in environmental management are ongoing and TIA is expected to soon complete the installation and deployment of one of the largest Solar Farm in Europe that will enable 50 MWpenergy produced and will place Tirana Airport among the few airports in Europe to reach Net 0 of carbon emissions by 2030.
